FOMC Alerts · October 28, 2026
FOMC day 0DTE SPX, in short, is a clock: statement at 2:00 PM ET, Chair Warsh’s press conference at 2:30, then the 2:45–4:00 continuation into the cash close. This is the same-day playbook — structure next to that clock — not a forecast of today’s print. Know the expected move before 2:00; let VIX price the premium; size defined risk. Action is largely priced: our calculation from fed funds futures using CME’s method, as of about 9:19 PM ET on Tue Oct 27, puts a Wednesday hold near 91.1% and at least one hike by Dec 9 near 79.1%. Residual energy is wording, the vote line, and tone — not a surprise hike.

What is the FOMC day 0DTE clock?
Three windows matter for same-day SPX options. At 2:00 PM ET the FOMC statement and implementation note land: the rate action, the vote line, and any action-dependent sentence. At 2:30 PM ET Warsh holds the press conference — tone and December color, not a second rate decision. From 2:45 to 4:00 the path continues into the cash close while same-day premium is still decaying into settlement. Warsh has chaired since May 22, 2026; today’s meeting is another scheduled decision under him (including the Sep 16 hike), not a first. October 28 has no SEP. For what each daily expiry already prices into this week, see FOMC implied move.
Same-day collide, one line each: 8:30 Census advance economic indicators; 9:45 Bank of Canada decision; MSFT and GOOGL after the close. Thursday 8:30 brings Q3 GDP and September PCE — a next-day crush caveat, not part of Wednesday’s clock.
How often does SPX close beyond the expected move on FOMC day?
Desk formula for the one-day expected move: prior SPX close × prior VIX/100 × √(1/365). In our calculation on a small sample of 29 scheduled FOMC decision days (2023-02-15 through 2026-10-27), the close-to-close move finished beyond 1× that prior-day VIX expected move 41.4% of the time versus 24.1% on non-FOMC days in the same window (899 sessions). FOMC median |Δ|/EM was 0.762; the close finished inside 1× on 58.6% of those meetings. Intraday high−low exceeded 1× EM on 82.8% of FOMC days. Small n — do not over-read, and do not treat any of this as a prediction for today’s close. The full scorecard table lives in our companion FOMC expected move vs actual piece. The evergreen definition of the range sits on expected move in options.

Does VIX fall on Fed day?
Open-to-close, not close-to-prior. Our calculation (Cboe VIX daily OHLC plus scheduled FOMC days in our history file, 2015-01-01 through 2026-10-23): VIX closed below its open on 54.8% of 93 FOMC days versus 61.9% of other days. On no-SEP meetings — the October 28 setup — that rate is 48.9% (n=47); SEP meetings 60.9%. Holds 55.6%; hikes 52.4%. All six 2026 FOMC days so far closed above the open. That is a base rate, not a crush call, and it is a different cut from close-versus-prior patterns in the FOMC Alerts hub.
On VIX1D since 2023 (n=28), the index fell from FOMC close to the next close 60.7% of the time versus 53.0% on other days — five of six 2026 meetings. When a crush shows up, it has more often been a next-day event; Thursday’s 8:30 GDP/PCE print is the caveat for this week. Mechanics belong on IV crush; we are not re-teaching them here, and we never claim implied vol reliably deflates after the presser.
How wide should a 0DTE butterfly be on FOMC day?
Education only — no trade call and no P&L promise. FatTail’s butterfly standard leads with the debit: 5–10% of the width, never more than 10% (1:19 to 1:9 risk-to-reward at max value). Regime widths in SPX/ES points:
- ZombieLand — VIX below 17 → 20–30 points
- Goldilocks 1 — VIX 17 to 24.5 → 30–40 points
- Goldilocks 2 — VIX 24.5 to 32 → 40–50 points
- Chaos — VIX above 32 → 50+ points
Tuesday’s close: SPX 7722.6, VIX 17.52 (open 18.43), VIX1D 12.53. VIX 17.52 sits at the ZombieLand / Goldilocks 1 boundary (cut at 17) — treat as Goldilocks 1 for width guidance (30–40) unless Wednesday’s open is clearly back under 17. Wednesday so far: VIX opened at 17.47 and read 17.25 at 11:16 AM ET (Massive real-time; SPX 7735), still above 17, so Goldilocks 1 holds. A 30-wide fly maps to a $1.50–$3.00 debit target band at 5–10%. Mechanics and payoff diagrams live on the 0DTE butterfly strategy guide; this post only places that standard next to the Fed-day clock.
- Energy: Scheduled event risk at 2:00 and 2:30 PM ET. Odds say the action is priced; residual is language and tone.
- Premium: Let VIX price it. Open-to-close drop below the open is not the base case on no-SEP FOMC days (48.9% below open). Know the expected move before the window.
- Structure: Defined risk only. Debit 5–10% of width; size so a wing tag is survivable. Observer CTA only.
- Plan, don’t predict: Write the three clock scenarios before 2:00 — statement as priced, presser adds uncertainty, path continues into the close — without picking a direction.
What comes after the October Fed decision?
