FOMC Alerts · November 2, 2026
The ISM Manufacturing October 2026 PMI print is out: the headline registered 55.5, one point above September’s 54.5, with Production at 59.0 — the highest since November 2021 — while Prices Paid is still rising for a 25th straight month but at a slower pace (75.2 from September’s 77.9). Our FatTail RateWatch Tool (CME fed funds futures) reads a 77.3% chance of a December 9 Fed hike as of 2:13 PM ET Mon Nov 2. Position over prediction: map the factory mix into Dec 8–9 structure — don’t call the vote. Full desk coverage sits on the FOMC Alerts hub.
ISM Manufacturing October 2026: what printed
Per the October 2026 ISM Manufacturing PMI Report (PR Newswire syndication) (PR Newswire syndication, Nov 2, 10:00 ET), manufacturing expanded for a 10th consecutive month. New Orders printed 55.5 (from 55.3). Employment eased to 52.4 (from 52.7) but remained in expansion. Inventories returned to expansion at 51.4 (from 48.6). Supplier Deliveries stayed elevated at 59.1 — above 50 means slower deliveries on ISM’s inverted scale.
Prices Paid fell 2.7 points from September’s 77.9 to 75.2. That is a slower rate of increase, not soft prices: the index has been in increasing territory for 25 straight months. ISM Chair Susan Spence noted the October PMI corresponds to about a 2.7% real GDP annualized pace on ISM’s stated relationship, and that the overall economy expanded for a 24th month (Manufacturing PMI above 47.5 over time as ISM’s rule of thumb).

What the ISM Manufacturing PMI is
The ISM Manufacturing PMI Report is a monthly survey of purchasing and supply executives. Each diffusion index equals the percent reporting a positive change plus one-half of those reporting no change. The Manufacturing PMI is an equal-weight composite of five indexes: New Orders, Production, Employment, Supplier Deliveries, and Inventories. A reading above 50 means manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50 means contracting. Supplier Deliveries is inverted (above 50 = slower deliveries). Prices is a separate index — it is not in the PMI composite — and tracks whether raw materials prices are rising. Methodology notes appear in ISM’s seasonal-adjustment materials and in the release’s data presentation section.
How it injects energy into the market. A surprise versus the prior print can reprice front-end rates (ZQ futures into RateWatch hike odds) and move ES/SPX through the growth/inflation mix. Hot Prices Paid with firm New Orders and Production is the hawkish factory mix; a soft print with cooling prices is the opposite. The 10:00 AM ET release lands inside the cash session, so same-day SPX options (including 0DTE) can amplify the first hour. We do not invent typical point moves — no ISM→SPX event study is on the desk this turn.
How it can affect upcoming rate decisions. The Fed hiked +25 bp to 3.75–4.00% on Sep 16 (12–0), then held Oct 28 (10–2) with Cook and Hammack preferring another hike (Fed Oct 28 statement). Kevin Warsh has chaired the FOMC since May 22, 2026. A still-expanding factory sector with Prices Paid at 75.2 keeps growth and pipeline-inflation evidence on the table into the Dec 8–9 meeting; the −2.7 move on Prices is a slower increase, not a return to soft prices. Map the print against live odds on RateWatch — do not predict the vote. | New Orders | 55.5 | 55.3 | +0.2 |
| Production | 59.0 | 56.7 | +2.3 (highest since Nov 2021) |

Spence, summarizing the headline: “The Manufacturing PMI ® registered 55.5 percent in October, 1 percentage point above the September figure of 54.5 percent. The overall economy expanded for the 24th month in a row.” On Prices, she said the reading is still being driven by “(1) increases in steel and aluminum prices that impact the entire value chain, (2) tariffs applied to many imported goods and (3) increases in petroleum-based products as a result of the Middle East conflict.”
RateWatch into Dec 8–9, and the tape
FatTail RateWatch Tool (CME fed funds futures): December 9 hike 77.3% / hold 22.7% as of 2:13 PM ET Mon Nov 2. Odds of at least one hike by the January 2027 meeting ≈ 83.6%. Live board: RateWatch. We cite the current stamped reading only — no intraday path, and no claim that today’s odds moved as a reaction to ISM.
Post-ISM futures tape as of ≈11:44 AM ET Mon Nov 2 (Massive REAL-TIME; label third-party Massive): ESZ6 7656.5 (+42.5 vs prior settlement 7614.0); VIX 18.82 (prior close 19.42). Cite ES, not cash SPX, for the live proxy. (U.S. Treasury daily yields: no Nov 2 H.15 print on Massive yet — omitted rather than cite the Oct 29 stale print.)
What it means for 0DTE
- Energy: Scheduled factory print at 10:00 AM ET — event risk via the growth/inflation mix and the front-end path into Dec 8–9, not a domestic FOMC statement.
- Premium: Let the VIX price the residual; VIX near 19 leaves room for a vol pop if the next hard print surprises, but do not invent an ISM-day range from this note alone.
- Structure: Defined risk only; know max loss before entry; size for a gap through your strikes if Prices Paid or the next labor print reprices Dec odds.
- Plan, don’t predict: Write two scenarios before you size — (1) firm Production/Orders with still-hot Prices keep Dec hike odds supported, (2) cooling Prices and softer follow-through ease the hawkish factory mix. Decide position rules in advance. Track odds on RateWatch; sibling labor-cost context: Employment Cost Index Q3 2026.
