ADP jobs report October 2026: ADP’s National Employment Report put private payrolls at +86,000 in October. That beat the Dow Jones consensus of +75,000 (via CNBC; other third-party calendars ran about 67K–75K — we name Dow Jones only). September was revised from 90,000 to 86,000. Base pay (median year-over-year): 3.2% for all workers, 3.0% for job-stayers, 4.8% for job-changers — do not call 3.2% a stayer print. Professional and business services fell −27,000 for a third straight month. Friday’s BLS Employment Situation still decides the official payrolls path; this note sets the board, not a forecast.

ADP jobs report October 2026: what printed

Per the ADP release (PR Newswire, Nov 4, 8:15 AM ET), private employment rose 86,000 in October. September was revised from a first print of 90,000 to 86,000. Goods-producing jobs +4,000 (construction +13K, manufacturing −1K, natural resources/mining −8K). Service-providing jobs +82,000: trade/transportation/utilities +39K, education and health +28K, leisure and hospitality +19K, financial activities +15K, other services +10K, information −2K, and professional and business services −27K (third consecutive monthly loss, per ADP).

By establishment size: small +28K, medium +33K, large +24K. By region: South +47K, West +28K, Midwest +9K, Northeast +3K.

Pay (ADP, median year-over-year): base pay 3.2% all workers · 3.0% job-stayers · 4.8% job-changers. Gross pay 4.7% all · 4.4% stayers · 7.6% changers. The Fed-relevant detail is the changer mix: gross pay for changers (7.6%) runs well above their base (4.8%) — ADP attributes the gap to bonuses, overtime, and hours, not base alone.

“Employers of all sizes were hiring last month, and our data suggests that job-changers were lured by a combination of bonuses, overtime, and more hours in addition to higher base pay,” said Dr. Nela Richardson, chief economist, ADP.

Named consensus for this article: Dow Jones +75,000 (via CNBC). Other third-party surveys in the brief sat near 67K–75K; we do not blend them into a single “street” number. Next ADP National Employment Report: Wed Dec 2, 2026, 8:15 AM ET.

What the ADP National Employment Report is

The ADP National Employment Report estimates private-sector employment change from ADP’s anonymized payroll records (about 26 million U.S. workers), produced with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab. It covers private payrolls only — no federal, state, or local government jobs. The monthly print lands on Wednesday at 8:15 AM ET, two days before the BLS Employment Situation. Base pay and gross pay splits (all workers / job-stayers / job-changers) are part of the same release; those are ADP constructs, not BLS Average Hourly Earnings.

How it injects energy into the market. A surprise versus a named consensus can reprice front-end rate odds and the labor path into Friday’s official payrolls. Same-day cash SPX often treats ADP as a second-tier print relative to NFP; the energy is usually in how the private-jobs / pay detail updates the Friday setup and December hike odds. We do not invent typical point moves from this note alone — and we do not attribute Wednesday’s SPX or VIX path to ADP (that open sat in the midterms-results session).

How it can affect upcoming rate decisions. The Fed hiked +25 bp to 3.75–4.00% on Sep 16 (12–0), then held Oct 28 (10–2) with Cook and Hammack preferring another hike (Fed Oct 28 statement). Kevin Warsh has chaired the FOMC since May 22, 2026. Two consecutive ADP private prints at +86K keep private hiring on the board into Dec 8–9, but September’s ADP-vs-BLS gap (ADP first print 90K vs BLS +29K, third-party) is the live reminder that ADP is not a substitute for Friday. Same-month cross-check (not a forecast): ISM Services PMI for October printed 54.5 (Sep 54.9) with employment at 51.4 — a demand cross-check for Friday, not a merge with the Nov 2 ISM manufacturing piece (ISM). Labor-demand context from openings: our JOLTS September 2026 note.

Into Friday’s BLS payrolls (Nov 6, 8:30 AM ET)

The BLS Employment Situation is the official establishment + household package: payrolls (including government), unemployment rate, and Average Hourly Earnings. ADP is private-only and a different instrument — September is the live divergence example (ADP first print 90K vs BLS +29K as cited on third-party calendars). Compare Friday’s private payrolls line with ADP; watch revisions to prior months, AHE m/m, and the unemployment rate.

Third-party Friday calendars (labelled light): mrkts.gg showed payrolls about 55K, UR 4.2%, AHE +0.3% m/m. Other desk notes in the brief spanned roughly 45K–75K (and one Pantheon snippet cited a 60K consensus while calling for 100K — snippet-only, keep light). We do not pick a single NFP consensus here the way we named Dow Jones for ADP.

RateWatch into Dec 8–9

FatTail RateWatch Tool (CME fed funds futures): December 9 hike odds 66.6% as of 12:10 PM ET (25bp steps only). Live board: RateWatch. A provisional morning stamp in the brief (84.2% hike / 15.8% hold as of 9:35 AM ET Nov 4) is not final and is not framed as an ADP reaction.

What it means for 0DTE

  • Energy: ADP is usually second-tier for same-day SPX versus Friday’s NFP. The path that matters for 0DTE is how private jobs + pay detail set the Friday open — NFP prints 8:30 AM ET, an hour before the cash open, so the overnight/futures gap carries it in.
  • Premium: Let the VIX price residual event risk into Friday; do not invent an ADP-day or NFP-day range from this note alone. Do not read Wednesday’s midterms-session tape as an ADP reaction.
  • Structure: Defined risk only; know max loss before entry; size for a gap through your strikes if Friday’s payrolls/AHE/revisions reprice Dec odds.
  • Plan, don’t predict: Write scenarios before 8:30 Friday — (1) private payrolls + AHE keep Dec hike odds supported, (2) a soft private print or soft AHE eases the labor/hike mix even after two +86K ADP prints, (3) a big revision surprise reframes August/September. Decide position rules in advance. Track odds on RateWatch. Scenarios: how to plan market scenarios for 0DTE SPX.
