FOMC Alerts · October 28, 2026
Fed headlines this week, counted: our headline tracker logged 1,254 Fed-related items from Oct 20 through Oct 27 (snapshot 9:54 PM ET Tue Oct 27). Daily volume peaked Mon Oct 26 at 210 and sat at 195 on Tuesday — ahead of today’s 2:00 PM ET FOMC statement and 2:30 press conference (no SEP). This is Fed Headline Pulse #1: a map of where coverage attention sat going into the decision, not a call on the SPX path. For the week’s calendar frame, see Fed meeting this week.

How does our headline tracker count Fed news this week?
Each day we collect Fed-related headlines from a fixed set of public news sources — 438 distinct outlets in this window, tagged with 24 topic labels. An item may carry more than one tag. We count by tag and by day, then mark topics that rose, appeared new, or faded versus earlier days in the same window under fixed rules: rising = last-2 daily average minus prior-5 daily average (and at least three hits in the last two days); new = zero in the prior five with data and at least three in the last two; fading = prior-5 average at least 4 and last-2 average at most 40% of that prior average.
Our headline tracker runs the same fixed set of search terms every day, so rises and fades reflect the news flow — not changes in what we look for. Fair caveat: because those fixed terms define which stories get caught, this piece focuses on changes over the week rather than raw totals alone. Some topics are also tracked with broader terms than others: one wide inflation search term alone supplies 40.5% of the 1,254 headlines, so the inflation and consumer share partly reflects how wide that term is. Read the week-over-week changes, not the raw size of each topic.
Which Fed topics are rising, new, or fading this week?
Top five rising topic tags (lift = last-2 avg/day − prior-5 avg/day):
- Fed — lift +43.9/day (last-2 avg 95.5 vs prior-5 avg 51.6; last-2 sum 191)
- consumer — lift +30.2/day (63.0 vs 32.8; sum 126)
- FOMC — lift +24.8/day (44.0 vs 19.2; sum 88)
- PCE — lift +17.4/day (106.0 vs 88.6; sum 212)
- hold — lift +14.5/day (26.5 vs 12.0; sum 53)
New under the rule: none. Fading: BOE — prior avg 5.8/day → last avg 1.0/day. Tag lifts are a map of coverage attention, not a ranking of what matters to the Committee.

What are the strongest Fed headline sources by topic?
Curated from our headline tracker’s rising-topic source list (prefer verdicts already marked useful for research; max two per tag). Dataset titles are paraphrased — they are not body quotes.
- Fed / FOMC: The New York Times (Oct 27) framed a hold as the base case and put the explanatory burden on Chair Warsh. Reuters (Oct 20) carried a near-unanimous economist poll leaning skip-October / hike-December.
- hold: Same Reuters poll plus a Bloomberg opinion line on sticky inflation testing the Fed’s resolve (Oct 21).
- PCE: Coverage tied gold and energy-led inflation pressure to the rate path — Bloomberg (Oct 19) and a WSJ commodities note on oil feeding inflation concerns.
- consumer: Tracker hits here were thinner on U.S. consumer primary releases; the list leaned risk-sentiment and overseas equity color (CNBC sentiment; Bloomberg on China equities) — treat as coverage sample, not a consumer-data print.
Re-read any URL before treating a line as a verified body quote. This edition uses zero verbatim quotes; the counts carry the piece.
What does the Fed headline mix say about what’s priced vs what could surprise?
Rising tags this window — Fed, consumer, FOMC, PCE, hold — line up with a coverage debate that skips October and keeps December live. That is descriptive of headlines only. The priced event remains today’s 2:00 PM ET statement and 2:30 presser. The funds rate sits in 3.75–4.00% after the Sep 16 +25 bp hike (12–0). Kevin Warsh has chaired since May 22, 2026; today’s meeting is another scheduled decision under him (the Sep hike already happened on his watch), not a debut.
Our calculation from fed funds futures using CME’s method, as of about 9:19 PM ET on Tue Oct 27, puts a Wednesday hold near 91.1% (hike ~8.9%) and at least one hike by Dec 9 near 79.1%. Odds detail belongs to the companion Fed hike odds swing October 2026 piece; here the point is only that coverage and futures both lean hold-today / debate-December.
Use the mix as a map of attention, not a forecast of the close. Same-day 0DTE premium sits in the expected move into those prints — structure planning on how to plan market scenarios for 0DTE SPX, and Fed-day VIX base rates on VIX term structure explained. Tuesday’s cash close: VIX 17.52 (open 18.43) — low end of Goldilocks 1 (17 to 24.5); ZombieLand is below 17, Goldilocks 2 is 24.5 to 32, Chaos above 32. Implied vol does not reliably deflate after the presser. Forward dates live on the FOMC meeting schedule 2026; for what daily expiries already price into this week, see FOMC implied move.
- Energy: Scheduled event risk at 2:00 and 2:30 PM ET. Headline mix shows where coverage sat; it does not pick the path.
- Premium: Let VIX price it. Know the expected move before the window; do not assume a crush after 2:30.
- Structure: Defined risk only. Size so a gap or wing tag is survivable. Observer CTA only.
- Plan, don’t predict: Write two attention scenarios before 2:00 — statement lands as the hold-leaning coverage expects, or wording/tone shifts the December debate — without betting a direction.
