FOMC Alerts · November 3, 2026
The JOLTS September 2026 print is out on election day: job openings rose +333k from a revised August 7.190M to 7.523M, and quits increased to 3.365M, per the BLS USDL-26-1630 release. Our FatTail RateWatch Tool (CME fed funds futures) reads an 85.2% chance of a December 9 Fed hike as of 2:35 PM ET Tue Nov 3. Position over prediction: map the labor-demand mix into Dec 8–9 and Friday’s October Employment Situation — don’t call the vote. Desk coverage: FOMC Alerts hub.
JOLTS September 2026: what printed
Per BLS, openings were little changed at 7.5 million in the summary language, with the table level at 7,523k. Hires were little changed at 5,402k; total separations little changed at 5,319k. Within separations, quits increased to 3,365k (~3.4M in the BLS summary), while layoffs and discharges were little changed at 1,641k. August openings were revised +111k to 7.2M.
We lead with the BLS month-over-month gain (+333k vs revised August). Third-party calendars disagree on the “estimate”: the 24/7 Wall St. / @wallstengine card used 7.10M; XTB’s calendar showed about 7.164M. Those are labeled aggregator figures, not a BLS or Bloomberg/Reuters poll — and we do not blend them into one consensus.

What the JOLTS report is
JOLTS is the BLS monthly survey of labor demand and turnover across private nonfarm and civilian government establishments. Job openings count positions open on the last business day of the month that meet three BLS conditions (work available, start within 30 days, active recruiting outside the establishment). Hires and separations cover the entire month. Quits are voluntary separations excluding retirements and transfers; layoffs and discharges are employer-initiated. The sample is a stratified random draw of about 21,000 establishments, with monthly benchmarking to CES employment (BLS Technical Note). JOLTS arrives with about a one-month lag versus the Employment Situation for the same reference month — September JOLTS on Nov 3, while October payrolls print Nov 6.
How it injects energy into the market. A surprise versus the prior print or versus a named third-party calendar can reprice front-end rates (ZQ futures into RateWatch Dec odds) and move ES/SPX through the labor-demand / wage-pressure mix. Rising openings with rising quits is the “hot demand / worker confidence” combination. The 10:00 AM ET release lands inside the cash session, so same-day SPX options (including 0DTE) can amplify the first hour. We do not invent typical point moves — no JOLTS→SPX event study is on the desk this turn.
How it can affect upcoming rate decisions. The Fed hiked +25 bp to 3.75–4.00% on Sep 16 (12–0), then held Oct 28 (10–2) with Cook and Hammack preferring another hike (Fed Oct 28 statement). Kevin Warsh has chaired the FOMC since May 22, 2026. Elevated openings and rising quits keep labor-demand evidence on the board into the Dec 8–9 meeting and Friday’s October Employment Situation (Nov 6, 8:30 AM ET). Map the print against live odds on RateWatch — do not predict the vote. Election day is calendar context only. Post-print futures tape as of ≈10:46 AM ET Tue Nov 3 (Massive REAL-TIME; label third-party Massive): ESZ6 7603.00 (+28.50 vs prior settlement 7574.5); VIX 20.50 (prior close 21.15). Cite ES, not cash SPX, for the live proxy. Any ES/VIX path is structure context, not a RateWatch Dec-repricing claim from this note.

What it means for 0DTE
- Energy: Scheduled labor-demand print at 10:00 AM ET — event risk via openings/quits and the front-end path into Dec 8–9 and Friday payrolls, not a domestic FOMC statement.
- Premium: Let the VIX price the residual; VIX near 20 leaves room for a vol pop if Friday’s payrolls surprise, but do not invent a JOLTS-day range from this note alone.
- Structure: Defined risk only; know max loss before entry; size for a gap through your strikes if the next labor print reprices Dec odds.
- Plan, don’t predict: Write two scenarios before you size — (1) firm openings/quits keep Dec hike odds supported into Friday, (2) a soft payrolls follow-through eases the hawkish labor mix. Decide position rules in advance. Track odds on RateWatch; sibling labor-cost context: Employment Cost Index Q3 2026.
